If you’re having trouble creating something (for example, writing an article or a presentation or even a program), use ChatGPT to create the first version and then edit it appropriately. You’ll find that this is much easier to do than to create the whole thing yourself from scratch, even if especially if ChatGPT is terrible at this and produces low-quality stuff.
Why? Because of Cunningham’s Law.
Cunningham’s Law of the internet points out that:
"The best way to get the right answer on the Internet is not to ask a question; it's to post the wrong answer."
This is funny, but also surprisingly accurate.
Politely request recommendations for a good Christmas movie to watch and you’ll get one or two responses. Just post on Twitter that “Die Hard is the best Christmas movie” (or Lord of the Rings (because it has elves) and you will get a whole bunch of people pointing out which other movie is the best Christmas movie and how your suggestion is stupid.
This is just human nature. We have a much higher motivation to point out others’ mistakes than to help others.
You can use this quirk of your nature to trick yourself into doing work. Basically, use ChatGPT to generate a quick draft, which you’ll see as something full of mistakes and low-quality stuff that is easy for you to criticize. Now, Cunningham’s Law kicks in and you find it much easier to get started on this task.
And if you think that this will not work with you and that you’re too smart to find this useful, think again. I got this suggestion from Terrence Tao, one of the top mathematicians in the world:
